Marine plywood and solid timber both belong in Lombok boatbuilding, but not in the same places. Solid hardwood — ulin, bengkirai and similar dense species — carries the structural load: keel, frames, stem, planking on traditional hulls. Marine plywood earns its keep in panels: bulkheads, decks, superstructure sides, interior joinery and the skins of light, fast hulls built over sawn frames. A well-specified Lombok build usually uses both, and the mistake owners make is letting one substitute for the other on price alone.
What marine plywood actually is — and what sells as “marine” in Indonesia
True marine plywood is built from durable veneers with no core voids, bonded with a boil-proof WBP phenolic glue line. The sheets survive permanent humidity and occasional immersion without the plies separating. That is the specification; the market reality in Indonesia is looser. Sheets stamped “marine” at general timber merchants range from genuine BS 1088-equivalent stock down to ordinary exterior ply with a marine sticker. The differences hide inside: core gaps, overlapping veneers and thin face plies that sand through at the first fairing pass.
The practical test the desk applies before any sheet goes on a boat: boil a sample offcut for an hour, dry it in the sun, and boil it again. Glue lines that survive stay in the project; sheets that delaminate go back. Where solid timber is the only right answer
Backbone and framing are solid-timber territory on every traditional Lombok hull. A keel takes grounding loads, fastener loads and the full weight of the boat on a cradle; laminating that from sheet material makes no sense when dense hardwood is available locally and shaped by hand with confidence. The same goes for sawn frames, stem, sternpost, engine beds and rubbing strakes — parts that need thickness, screw-holding power and abrasion resistance.
Solid planking is also the default for working boats that live on beaches and slipways. A plank can be replaced individually; a plywood skin panel cannot be patched with the same ease once glassed. Where marine plywood beats solid wood
Plywood wins wherever you need a wide, stable, light panel:
- Bulkheads and web frames. A 18–25 mm ply bulkhead is dimensionally stable across humidity swings that would move a glued-up solid panel, and it arrives flat.
- Decks and cabin sides. Ply sheathed with fibreglass and epoxy makes a stiff, watertight deck at a fraction of the weight of laid solid decking — weight that matters high up, where it hurts stability.
- Fast hull skins. Gili-crossing hulls built for speed benefit from ply-over-frame or ply-epoxy composite construction: lighter structure means less horsepower for the same schedule, a trade explored on the fast boat build page.
- Interior fit-out. Furniture, linings and lockers in ply keep a liveaboard’s interior weight sane and its joinery square.
Cost, weight and lifespan: the honest comparison

On cost, the comparison is less direct than it looks. Good marine ply is not a low-priced material in Indonesia — genuine sheets cost multiples of ordinary exterior ply — while solid hardwood pricing depends on species, section size and legal documentation. The failure modes to design out
Plywood fails at its edges. Every cut edge is end grain for fifteen or more veneers at once; water that enters an unsealed edge wicks along the glue lines and the panel rots from inside while the faces still look fair. The rule on desk-supervised builds: every edge sealed with neat epoxy before assembly, every fastener hole in ply pre-drilled and wetted out, and no ply below the waterline unless it is fully encapsulated in glass and epoxy.
Solid timber fails differently — at fastenings and joints. Dense species split when nailed without pilot holes, and mixed-metal fastenings set up corrosion cells in salt-saturated wood. Inspection at framing and planking stages checks exactly these points, plank by plank, before anything is hidden by paint.
How the desk specifies the mix on a real build
A typical 15 m Lombok passenger boat under our supervision carries: solid ulin keel, stem and floors; sawn bengkirai frames; solid planking below the sheer; 18 mm marine ply main bulkheads, glassed both faces; 15 mm ply deck over solid beams, sheathed in 600 g biaxial glass and epoxy; and ply-cored joinery throughout the cabin. The specification is written into the build contract with brand, grade and glue standard named, so “marine ply” can never quietly become “exterior ply” between quotation and lamination. Is marine plywood available in Lombok?
Genuine marine-grade plywood is available through larger Indonesian timber merchants, but sheets sold as “marine” vary widely. The reliable check is a boil test on a sample offcut: boil for an hour, sun-dry, boil again. Sheets whose glue lines survive are usable; sheets that delaminate are exterior ply wearing a marine label.
Can plywood be used below the waterline?
Only when fully encapsulated in fibreglass and epoxy with every edge and fastener hole sealed. Unsealed plywood edges wick water along the glue lines and rot from inside. On desk-supervised builds, structural ply below the waterline is the exception, not the rule, and always sheathed.
Why not build the whole hull from solid timber?
Weight and stability. Solid decking, cabin sides and bulkheads add mass high in the boat where it hurts stability, and wide solid panels move with humidity. Plywood panels are lighter, dimensionally stable and arrive flat — which is why decks, bulkheads and interiors are natural plywood territory.
How is the plywood specification enforced during a build?
The contract names brand, grade and glue standard per application, and material intake is inspected before sheets are cut. Boil-test results, moisture readings and photographs go into the build file, so the specified sheet cannot quietly become a lower grade between quotation and lamination.
