Lombok Boat Builder

New-build yard desk for Gili, Lombok and Komodo routes — custom commercial and private vessels for crossing operators, liveaboard programmes, dive centres and private owners. A hull here starts from the route: how many miles, how exposed the strait, how many passengers, which certificate.

The route sheet

The route decides the hull

Left column: how the water behaves. Right column: what that does to the design. A Gili shuttle and a Komodo liveaboard are different boats before a single line is drawn.

Gili crossings

Short, sometimes rough legs · exposed boarding

Priority on quick embarkation and disembarkation, robust fendering, good low-speed control and repeatable turnarounds from Bangsal, Teluk Nara and Senggigi.

Lombok–Bali fast routes

Longer legs across open straits

Hull efficiency, fuel planning, seakeeping and safe passenger seating become critical on the Bali–Lombok–Nusa Penida legs.

Komodo liveaboards

Slower passages · continuous operation

Ventilation, tankage, cold storage, crew workflow and service access matter as much as guest cabins on Lombok–Sumbawa–Labuan Bajo itineraries.

Resort & dive operations

Frequent stops · heavy wet gear

Deck layout, shade, rinse areas and compressor placement need careful planning for repeated in-water entries around Gili and Sekotong.

Open-strait legs put hull efficiency and seakeeping at the top of the specification.

Hull material lanes

Timber, aluminium, GRP — chosen by load pattern

We work within Indonesian regulations and local material availability. Full comparison on the hull materials page.

Timber

Wood lane · ulin & bengkirai

Selected hardwoods with scantlings planned for your displacement, rig and load pattern. Frames, keel and planking sized for the boat you will actually run — the phinisi and day-charter lane.

Aluminium

Metal lane · marine-grade plate

Welded plate and profiles to a structural plan balancing stiffness, weight and ease of inspection. Longitudinal framing and bulkheads set against Selat Lombok slamming loads — the fast-boat lane.

From route to sea trial

How a new build starts

Define the operation

Route legs, maximum passenger or guest numbers, cargo profile, and whether you target Kemenhub passenger certification or private use.

Choose the hull type

Fast monohull, catamaran, phinisi or open dive boat — an indicative platform matched to the route, not a brochure concept.

Outline the specification

Engine power range, fuel type, generators, cabin count, galley and cold storage, diving facilities, tenders and toys.

Fixed-scope quotation

Measurable stages with milestone payments, provisional sums highlighted where choices remain open — then the price is fixed by contract.

Build with survey hold points

Milestone photo reports to an evidence standard, independent inspection at each gate, and a video sea trial before handover.

What BKI surveyors and the local Syahbandar look for at inspection: watertight bulkheads, escape routes, stability documentation, machinery access and fire protection — we build with those checks in view from the first drawing. Details on the class & certification page.

The honest ledger

What is inside — and outside — the contract sum

A contract amount is built up from discrete technical packages. Unpriced scope is unbuilt scope, so both columns are listed before you sign.

Inside a typical new-build price

  • Hull and superstructure — keel, frames, planking or laminate, decks, house, structural bulkheads and tanks, engine beds
  • Machinery — main engines and gearboxes, shafting, props, rudders, steering gear, exhausts, engine-room ventilation
  • Systems — fresh water, black/grey water, bilge and fire pumps, fuel transfer, electrical generation and distribution
  • Navigation and communication — radar, echo sounder, GPS/plotter, AIS, radios, antennas, basic monitoring
  • Interior and exterior fit-out — cabins, saloon, galley, crew areas, deck fittings, railings, boarding arrangements
  • Safety equipment baseline — liferafts, jackets, flares, firefighting equipment, aligned with agreed passenger count
  • Design, drawings and documentation — working drawings, structural details, schematics for Kemenhub and Syahbandar

Normally excluded — owner’s supply or pass-through

  • Government fees and taxes — measurement and registration (Surat Ukur, Gross Akte, Pas Besar), inspection fees
  • Owner-furnished equipment — dive compressors, rental gear, specialised tenders, toys, kayaks, SUPs
  • Loose hotel and galley equipment — linen, crockery, small appliances, consumables, decorative loose furniture
  • Owner’s project costs — legal, surveyor or consultant fees engaged directly by the owner
  • Crew training and operational certification — STCW courses, internal SOPs, ISM-style manuals
  • Foreign-flag or special-class costs — registration or compliance outside normal Indonesian domestic regimes

Exclusions can be listed and costed in the contract appendices so the full economic picture is visible before keel-laying. The framework lives on the contract, payment and supervision page.

Owner questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a boat built in Lombok if I live overseas?

Yes. Most desk clients commission remotely: every build stage produces milestone photo reports to an evidence standard, independent inspection at each gate, and a video sea trial before handover. Owner visits at lofting and at handover are recommended because they add the most value, but they are not required — the supervision cadence is designed for owners who cannot stand in the shed.

How much does it cost to build a boat in Lombok?

Indicative bands run from about USD 12,000–18,000 per metre for simple open workboats up to USD 30,000–60,000 per metre for fully finished liveaboard and passenger vessels, with engines often the single largest swing. The full per-metre table by material and boat type, plus what moves the number, is on the USD price-band page. Statutory government fees are quoted factually in IDR.

How long does a new build take in Lombok?

Typical ranges: an open dive or day boat runs several months; a Gili fast boat somewhat longer once engine lead times are counted; a 20 m wooden hull is a multi-season project. The monsoon calendar shifts lamination, painting and launch windows, so the schedule is planned around it — stage-by-stage durations are on the build process and timeline page.

Who signs the build contract?

Construction contracts are issued by PT Komodo Galangan Nusantara, the group's construction entity. The contract carries the specification schedule, a milestone payment table tied to inspected progress, and supervision terms in writing — no verbal scope, no majority payment upfront.

Which routes are Lombok-built boats commissioned for?

Most commissions serve the Gili Trawangan–Gili Air–Bangsal crossings and Lombok's south coast, with a steady share built for delivery passages onward to Komodo waters. The operating route is fixed at the brief stage because it drives fuel capacity, freeboard, safety fit and certification scope.
